The district was formed in 1922 to deliver water to the Fallbrook area. Back then, the delivered water was drawn from local wells, which were abandoned decades ago. Today, FPUD imports virtually all of its water. The district has also expanded its services since then and now treats sewage and provides recycled water for use in irrigation. FPUD delivers water to about 35,000 people over 28,000 acres.
